The Cost of doing Nothing…

Let’s make a big splash with energy savings.
Picture
If you like money, please keep reading! Owning and operating a pool can have a huge impact on your homes electrical consumption. In My lifetime I have never witnessed energy rates go down and I don’t expect them to every go down. What I do expect is the utility rates to increase annually. The old Standard single speed pool pump is a thing of the past, although they have been in use in the pool and spa industry for decades, being the least expensive of pumps, they are also the loudest and cost the most amount of money to run every day averaging in some cases $2000 dollars a year to run 8 to 12 hours every day on a single speed.  Imagine driving your car everywhere you go with the gas pedal smashed to the floorboard. You are going to waste a lot of gas.

A single speed pool pump is the gas guzzler of pool equipment consuming huge amounts of electricity every day. It only has one speed, pedal smashed to the floorboard. Although you and your car might be in a hurry to get somewhere, your pools water is in no hurry to get thru the filtration cycle.  This is what we pool professionals call a turnover rate. The turnover rate is defined as the amount of time it takes all of the water in your pool to go thru the filter. However not all of the water is passed thru the filter in a single turnover. The filtered water is returned to the pool where it mixes with unfiltered water. This substantially increases the time and number of turnovers needed to filter ALL the water in your pool. FOUR turnovers per day are what is required by many local health codes on commercial pools.  Weather you get there in 6 hours or 16 hours the results are the same, so why rush it.

The Variable Speed pool pump is a modern marvel. It was introduced to the pool and spa industry in the early 2000’s. Unlike the old induction motors of single speed pump motors, variable speed pumps use a TEFC (totally enclosed fan cooled permanent magnet motor. This is the very same type of motor used in today’s modern electric vehicles. These new motors are computer controlled and allow the user to dial in the most efficient speed and flow rate for the pools application. As you may have read in prior blogs no two pools are the same, no two pools have the same hydraulic characteristics. By running the pump at a lower speed, you are reducing the work the motor does, reducing the amount of electricity it consumes.

The golden rule of hydraulics is “slower is better”. Running the pump at a lower speed allows the hydraulic system to run more efficiently, produce less friction, runs quieter, the pump lasts longer. In most cases you will see an annual savings of 75%-90% on your pool pumps electrical consumption. A variable speed pump will greatly improve your pools filtration. The performance of your pool filter improves when water flows thru it more slowly, this increases the opportunity for particle removal.  This will translate into less filtration time even at a lower speed leading to even more energy savings. We achieve this determining factor by performing an energy audit to show you exactly how much money you are going to save by installing a variable speed pool pump on your pool.  Your average return on investment is above 400% over 5 years.

In many states as it is the case in California they have adopted energy-efficiency regulations regarding the sale and installation of inefficient, costly-to-operate pumps and motors. The California Energy Commissions “Appliance Efficiency Regulations” (Title 20) prohibit the sale and installation of singles speed residential pool filtration pumps or replacement motors with a capacity of one total horsepower or above.

To the homeowner this means basically if you have more than ½ horsepower pump it’s now become illegal to replace that motor or pump with an equal rated replacement motor or pump. You are required to replace the pump or motor with a new energy efficient variable speed pump.  Federal regulations are set to start in the year 2020 that all pool pumps must be variable speed.  A single speed motor or pump is a dying breed.

If you need a new pump, and if you don’t already have a variable speed pump believe me when I say YOU NEED THIS PUMP, or simply want to reduce your energy costs, this is a great time to purchase a variable-speed pump or motor. Qualifying products can yield large rebates from utility companies of up to $1000 dollar, also a large majority of manufactures of these variable speed pumps are also  offering homeowners of residential pools that purchase a new variable speed pump additional consumer rebates of up to $100 dollars.

Key benefits of installing a variable speed pump

  • Controllable speed
  • Huge energy savings, more money in your pocket.
  • Adaptability ready for automation additional equipment (uv salt, ozone, solar heat)
  • Runs quieter
  • Less wear and tear on other components of your pool ( heater, filter, pipes)
  • Lasts longer than traditional single speed pumps

Tips for Installing a variable speed pump:
Call a professional!  Professional pool technicians are trained and understand your pools hydraulic system, they know the best settings and programming for the most energy efficiency, replacing an existing pool pump with a variable speed requires electrical and hydraulic knowledge, this is not something you want to try and do yourself. These are expensive highly complex pieces of equipment and in most cases in order to qualify for manufacturer's warranty and utility rebates these pumps must be installed by a licensed certified aquatic equipment installer. So...Where's My Online Warranty?

You want to try and save a few dollars and purchase some pool equipment, or replacement parts online. Now what’s next?....  Make sure you select the Buck Rogers install plan at checkout. Oh and that online extended warranty? Wait… why don’t they offer that? Ah-ha… GOTCHA!!!
Let me explain to you the Homeowner why it’s such a terrible idea to purchase your swimming pool equipment from anyone other than your local swimming pool professional or local authorized retailer.
Picture
Picture
No swimming Pool professional I know will want to install equipment or products purchased online by a homeowner for multiple reasons. Your swimming pool professional will have the knowledge to know what equipment would work best and what would not work at all for your specific system, no two pools are the same.  Often times the homeowners make an incorrect purchase. Your pool professional does not want to be on the hook for anything beyond his control.  We don’t want to be responsible for it if we don’t know where it came from. Much like any other high end goods, there are counterfeit products out there on the gray market.  The other and biggest risk you are taking is the manufactures gives you little to NO warranty on their products which you choose to purchase online.

Picture
In my professional opinion an additional 2-4 year warranty is worth a lot more than the few dollars you might save purchasing items online, By purchasing online, you are taking a huge risk purchasing used or even counterfeit products, open box returned, items, or old inventory that may or may not be compatible with your current system. You also are taking the risk of purchasing items that have zero manufacture warranty.  This is why I highly recommend you purchase from a pool professional.

Picture
No manufacturer wants to leave the online channel completely, after all it's a huge source of income for everyone, and it makes no sense to drop it altogether.

There is no denying however, that massive undercutting of their product rates on a gray market can dilute the value of the company's products as well as their online presence.  some of you might think “it’s easier, I can browse online and pick and choose what I think I need and read reviews from customers that have bought it prior” yet for most of you your pool service professional comes to your house every week and knows your pool and equipment better than anyone why not ask them their opinion.

Your pool professional knows current electrical codes, and city and state regulations & ordinances, has knowledge of pump curves, hydraulic systems, Don’t keep your pool service professional in the dark about your desire to be more energy efficient and desire to utilize some of the latest technological advances in the pool equipment industry. A good pool service professional would have already approached you in regards to updating your old aging non energy efficient equipment.
Picture
So where’s my warranty? It’s become a huge peril of shopping online, many manufactures are taking steps to protect  their authorized retailers from gray market online sales.  Pool equipment manufactures are now manufacturing “Trade Series” products that are not available to online markets, but only thru pool professionals, authorized distribution and authorized retailers.

These companies aren't doing anything wrong. However, when consumers buy an expensive pool product online only to find that it isn't covered under warranty, there is only one loser in the whole deal. The consumer that bought it.

Picture
Agents of or the manufacture itself will require proof of purchase and product registration prior to any warranty repair. Also there are many additional factors that could void your factory warranty so you want to make sure you purchased and have your equipment installed by a trained skilled pool professional who will make sure the job is done correct and check all other areas of your pool equipment to make sure its installed, operating and programmed correctly. some of these factors are:

Picture
  • Failure to properly install, operate or maintain their product in accordance with the manufactures published installation, operation and/or maintenance manuals.
  • Poor workmanship of any installer of the product.
  • Use of non-factory authorized parts or accessories in conjunction with your equipment
  • Improper product modifications or adjustments
  • Not maintaining proper pool and/or spa chemical balance
  • Abuse, damage during transit or shipping
  • Improper installation ie: not grounding and/or bonding miss-wiring, loose wiring, cut or kinked wires, loose connections, incorrect wire runs, incorrect breaker size, breaker(s) with improper wire gauge, moisture in electrical conduit, improper electrical supply, incorrect plumbing, inadequate size of pipe and/or fittings, over-tightening, under-tightening improper gas pipe sizing, lack of proper gas pressure, inadequate heater venting improper equipment sizing, programming errors, operating the product at water flow rates below minimum, or above maximum specifications.
It’s not worth the little savings you might gain by purchasing pool products online rather than to purchase your swimming pool equipment from a licensed trained skilled pool professional and have them install it. The benefits you will receive are far greater than the risks involved with online purchases.

Most manufactures provide you with extended or additional warranty period and or rebates when you purchase thru a authorized distributor, retailer, or your swimming pool service professional.
